Evaluation time!

It's finally time for evaluations!

We've managed to finish our music video and edit it all, so it's finally time to evaluate it. We've been given 4 questions to explore in detail, and must be answered in a variety of different ways. Here they are:

I've brainstormed a lots of different ideas of how to present my evaluations, such as:

  1. Prezi presentation
  2. Powerpoint
  3. iMovie
  4. Vlog
  5. Slideshare.
While all of these methods are ideal for presenting, methods that require a Mac are slightly more challenging due to the limited access to the Macs. That said however, I will be attempting to make most of my presentations on the school Macs, so hopefully iMovie will be used!

Audience Feedback Vlog (Showcase)

So, I managed to do a quick little blog about the audience feedback we got (or didn't get). Here it is:

Editing our final shot!

So today we finished editing our final shot (not the entire thing, just the final ending shot) and I'm really excited! It works perfectly with the emotional, heartfelt message that we wanted to send out to our audience of achieving goals, and also holds very strong links with Katy Perry's 'Part of Me', which is something else we also really wanted to portray.

We feel like our last shot is a lot less sexualised than Katy Perry's, but holds very similar elements, such as the colour palate and expression.

Re-filming the letter scene

After looking back at the footage we'd edited, we weren't as pleased with the letter shot as we were with the rest of our filming. After little discussion, we decided to re-film the shots and managed to get a variety of different angles and shots. We realised while filming the first time round we hadn't got enough variation of shots, so this time round we made sure to film the letter being delivered about 10 times, so we had multiple shots to choose from, and to also ensure that we had lots of different shots that captured Janadhi walking towards the letter, opening the letter and her expressions. We've found that the footage this time round was a lot more successful, and have already edited it in.

The Car Scene

So today, as planned, we decided to film the long awaited scenes we needed of Janadhi running behind a car. We needed the car in order to shoot the scenes due to how much smoother and simpler it would be, as if we had filmed her running without the car, we would also have had to be running backwards. This would have been too complicated and someone (Kelly) would have probably fallen over. The car also made the shots a lot more smoother than they otherwise would be, which was essential in order to maintain a professional look throughout the video.
In addition to the health hazard, we would be able to create a variety of complicated shots, such as the panning shot we captured from the ground to Janadhi running. Using the car made the pan so much smoother and cleaner than it would have been if we had filmed it by hand.

In all, we're really pleased how these shots came out, and are probably our favourite shots out of the whole video! They've made it look a lot more refined, and given us the professional edge we wanted.

Digipak and Magazine advertisement editing pt. 3

After creating the main elements of my digipak, I decided to implement them when creating my magazine advert. The key features that I ensured I copied for my magazine advertisement were:
a) Colour palette
b) Imagery (Portrait image, tree image duplicated)
c) Font

It was important to make sure these elements matched, as otherwise the two would look very unprofessional together. In addition to this, I think together they all look much sleeker when they have a element which links them all, and therefore are much more aesthetically pleasing.
I'm really happy with how they're both progressing, and I think the finished products will soon be up!

Filming the letter scene

One of the scenes we still hadn't shot as a group was the scene of a letter coming through the door in order to allow the audience to know that our protagonist had been accepted into the army. We decided to shoot it today at Holly's house, which we felt was the best setting as it looked the most realistic and was easily accessible for all of us.

Editing the digipak pt. 2

Again in order to tie in with the indie genre, I decided to include the vocalist on the front of the digipak, even though he wasn't present for the actual music video. I think this will again make the digipak more professional, as it gives the artist a face that the music video doesn't show, due to it being strictly a narrative video. I decided to make this black and white as well, as it will blend nicer with the rest of the digipak.

Deciding on the font was a big thing for me when creating my digipak, as it had to hold an edge that you would manly find in indie music products. Using website 'DaFont', I found a font called 'Neou', which I think is perfect for my digipak, as it feels quite edgy and fits with the photography of my digipak.

Editing the digipak pt. 1

In order to tie together the music video, the digipak and the magazine advertisement, I've decided to still focus on the imagery of nature, which played an important role in our music video. I've incorporated this into my digipak by using a shot of the trees that I took while filming the running shots for my video, however to conform to the indie genre I decided to change it to black and white. Although we didn't use a black and white colour scheme for the music video, I feel that the digipak will look much more professional, as most real digipaks are not strongly linked to just one music video and therefore changing the photo to black and white made it much more universal for the rest of the videos we would later produce.

Digi-Pak Process

Here's the half-finished front and back cover of my dig-pak! I'm really pleased with how it's progressing so far, but it's been quite hard having to figure out all of the features of photoshop.

I still need to add a few key features, such as a barcode, copy write and other pieces, however I'm feeling quite confident about the process so far! I'll have a vlog up soon discussing my progress.

Reshooting shots

While looking at our old footage, we decided that weren't completely satisfied the filming we had done previously in the gym. The best plan of action was to reshoot a few bits, and to also film a couple more shots to bulk up our video just in case we didn't like the new shots either.
We decided to get a few uniform shots in, which resulted in being the best ones (in my mind, anyway).

The shots that were more strenuous for us to film were the ones that featured Janadhi's regular clothes being swapped with her new army clothes. We probably shot and reshot the scene at least 20x over, due to the problem of spacing and accidentally having our faces and clothes in the scene by mistake. It looked very unprofessional, so we had to continue filming until we got a shot that we were satisfied with. It was a long process, but worth it!

Editing

Even with the lack of final shots, my group and I are trying out hardest to complete all of the editing we possibly can. We can see a clear difference between editing in AS and A2, due to having to have all of the shots change on beat with the music, making it a little harder for us! It's an activity that we're all enjoying though, and is giving us inspiration for more filming, which is never a bad thing.

Digi-Pak font

With my digi-pak in progress, I've been looking at the smaller details in a lot focus. I've decided to use a website 'DaFont' to browse fonts that I might use for my final product. I'm currently most interested in 'Shoreline Script Bold'.

Analysis of advertisements

Lana Del Rey:

  • -       Star Image, large icon of star overlapping name
  • -       Vintage styling and backdrop
  • -       Bold, plain text, matches well with mise-en-scene
  • -       Name important, largest text
  • -       Release dates, songs featured
  • -       ‘Amazon’ featured
  • -       Clear link between Album and Advert

Florence and The Machine:

  • -       Large Star Image, fills the frame, goes over the edges
  • -       Artistic, unrealism with lungs over body
  • -       Dark colour palate, makes star and small features stand out, vintage feel
  • -       Light text, bold against dark colour scheme, artistic text, italic
  • -       Songs featured, website URL
  • -       Release date
  • -       Clear link between Album and Advert

Album magazine advertisement research

As a task, I've looked at four different magazine advertisements for different albums in the indie genre. This has given me an insight to how different advertisements vary, and the range of different techniques I can use when creating my advert. From the research, it's clear that most advertisements in the indie genre use the convention of 'star image' with a more artistic or 'quirky' look. These are the four that I looked at:

Less of 'star image', more artistic take

'Star image' with vintage aspects

'Star image' along with an artistic, rustic look

'Star image' present, with a vintage, rustic element.

Digi-Pak Inspiration and Brainstorming

I've been inspired by a variety of different factors while brainstorming ideas about the digi-pak, and my two main inspirations are digi-paks already created by artists of the indie genre and the nature aspects of our music video. I'm planning to explore the route of nature and paintings, much like the digi-pak previously posted by Bon Iver. The nature element is a key feature within our music video, and I plan to tie this is with both my digi-pak and advertisement.
Other aspects I've considered exploring alongside more nature based artwork is the idea of 'star image'. I could create this by overlaying an image of the 'star' on a nature background, still ensuring that my digi-pak links to my music video.
